If you happen to find yourself in Denver during the July 4th holiday, you will want to make it a point to spend a couple of hours at the Cherry Creek Arts Festival. Regardless if you are a art critic or not, the festival has something for everyone.
Located, about 10 minutes south east of downtown Denver is the Cherry Creek shopping area. The area is broken up into 2 parts. First is Cherry Creek Shopping Mall. This is your typical shopping mall, so it’s not worth a special trip. The second section is called Cherry Creek North. While the landscape has been changing in Cherry Creek North, its primarily made up of boutique shopping and independent restaurants. If you like to shop at high-end boutiques, this is worth the travel.
Every year since 1991, the Cherry Creek North area is transformed into an art mecca. There are 290 artists who display their work in 10’ x 10’ booths. This is all original art, and typically the artist is on hand. The art covers a wide gambit, from traditional painting, to glass blowing, to jewelry and everything in between.
Like any festival there is over priced food and beer. They have some special events, but these vary every year. Also, the event is kid friendly (sort of). There is a half city block which all kinds of fun crafts and arts projects the kids can do. We took our 2 boys down there and spent a good 2 hours before we decided it was time to go. The reason I say sort of, is there is a lot of very expensive artwork, and for some reason arts just don’t like having little kids put their hands all over 4 and 5 figure artwork.
A couple things you should know before you head down there. Parking is a pain in the butt. I highly recommend taking a cab or walking. They do also have free bike valet services, so if you have your bike with take a nice ride there and park your bike with no worries.
Its most likely going to be hot or rain. Every year we have gone, its either been really hot or its rained. This is an outdoor festival held on the city streets. By midday the streets heat up, thus making the event very hot. I recommend getting and early start and get there when it first opens, typically, 10:00 AM.
Bring your patients, the festival has on average 350,000 visitors over 3 days. So there are a lot of people there. Most are just having a good time, but it’s a slow paced event.
The best part is the Cherry Creek Arts Festival is free, unless you opt to buy food or drink. This is one of the best things to do in Denver during the 4th of July weekend.
