We all love ice cream. Well the next time you are in Denver, take trip over to Bonnie Brae Ice Cream. They are located just south of downtown Denver by about 10 minutes. It’s a short cab ride (as long as its not rush hour) to some very good ice cream.
Ken and Judy Simon and partners Cindy and Bob Pailet have been dishing out scoops of ice cream since 1986. The storefront has been there for over 50 years. Basken-Robins’ 31 flavors can’t hold a candle to this crew. They have 60 flavors and they also seem to have new one when we stop buy.
All of their ice cream, sherbets and sorbets are made on site. While they don’t claim to be all organic, they do use high quality ingredients. You will certainly understand this when the ice cream hits your pallet.
I don’t want to stretch the truth and says it’s the best ice cream I have ever had, but I will say Bonnie Brae Ice Cream is on my short list.
What I find most appealing about their shop is the overall package. When you first drive up you feel like you must have time traveled. The outside looks like its from the 1950’s, which it basically is. You will be greeted by a long line, which goes out the door and sometimes around the corner. Don’t let that scare you away, the line moves quickly and you’ll be licking you ice cream in no time.
The inside is just as appealing as the outside. The small 1” hexagon tiled floor, subway tiles and old fashion shake blenders. What more could you want?
This isn’t some snobby ice cream shop bragging about how they caramelize the nuts before chopping them on a 18th century nut crusher. Nope, this is a just plan old good ice cream. It’s basically a Denver Institution.
So stop by and grab a scoop or have a milkshake blended up. My favorite flavor is the Bushmills Irish Cream. My wife’s go to flavor is the Butter Brickle.
